Seeing success!!

SO to catch everyone up since last Wednesday- time has flown by so quickly that I didn't e en realize it had been so long since I last wrote on here. Anywaysss....
I will start with last Thursday. Second grade went on a field trip! Now, this sounds fun and exciting, but it was kinda long and drawn out and not, in my opinion, developmentally appropriate. First, we got lost. We went to the wrong school and ended up on the bus for about an hour instead of the estimated 20-30 minutes it should have been. The children in second grade had written poems for a poetry contest about the "carnival of animals". Turns out this is a 14 movement piece of music about the different animals the children had to choose to write about. Each child who submitted a poem got their poem published in the anthology and got an anthology to take home. This meant the world to my kids! They were so excited to hear the words: "You are a published author!" their faces just lit up from ear to ear! The ceremony itself was about an hour long of listening to the SC philharmonic orchestra play all 14 movements of this piece... not good for 2nd graders. They were bored and wiggly as you can imagine! When we got back, we had lunch and recess and then did a quick math lesson and some social studies and went home- overall, a very easy day! The best part of the day was when we got on the bus and were driving down the main road out of their community and they kept seeing and reading the signs for the restaurants and streets that they recognized from the books we had been reading in class! They were practically out the windows with excitement! This made me so proud of them and I felt like I have actually accomplished something!
Friday was pretty good as well! I had the class pretty much to myself all day and they were well behaved and we took it easy since it was Friday. I'm all about a fun Friday! We took a math test, a spelling test, and the rest of the time we did whole group activities that were fun and educational since they had to take these 2 tests. They also started to work on their books about their community and what they have learned about where they live.
This week was off to a GREAT start. Monday, I had the room pretty much to myself and the children were very calm all day- surprising for a Monday! Everyone who came in said they were so calm- monster compliment! Yay! We got so much done on Monday since they were so well behaved. Nothing major to report here except that they are recognizing more and more high frequency words around them and this is showing me that they their knowledge is improving and proving my action research to be right! YAY!
Today, Tuesday was an OK day... all things considered we did well getting things done. In the morning we finished making kites and we took them outside and the children go to fly them! They did so well with this and were able to recall the correct information regarding wind and the affect it has on objects that fly like kites! I video taped them and they got to watch themselves, and as usual, they loved this! This afternoon though it was raining so we didn't have recess, you know what that does to children, and they had computer lab for related arts so they were wound up! When it came time for social studies, they were so wiggly that I shut the door and turned up so rock disney music and we had a short dance party to get the wiggles out and be able to focus... this really helped them to calm down!
